THE GUITAR MASH MISSION

Guitar Mash is a non-profit organization that creates opportunities for guitarists and music lovers to connect in a profound way, while supporting music education and communal creativity.

Called a “movement” by the Wall St. Journal, Guitar Mash connects people of all ages, abilities, and culture through making music together, with the guitar – that most democratic of instruments – as the fulcrum.

“ON GIVING AWAY YOUR INSTRUMENT”

On Sunday April 13th, Zachary Woolfe wrote a piece in The NYTimes explaining his impetus to donate his old cello to the WQXR instrument drive for at-need public schools. Guitar Mash founder Rebecca Weller wrote the following letter to the editor.

Woolfe’s piece — and specifically the comparison of his cello to an appendix, “useless and forgotten” — filled me with great sadness. I’d prefer for Woolfe to have likened his unworked cello to a bicep or a deltoid. An instrument not being used is not useless, after all, but rather “used-less.”

Supporting at-need music programs in public schools is profoundly important. But equally “at-need” are the people who no longer draw, or sing, or play the instrument they put so much time into learning and practicing many years ago.

Returning to your instrument need not involve reinstituting hours of practice or finding the resources to rehearse with a band. If you have a cello or guitar gathering dust somewhere, pull it out and play it for ten minutes. Play for yourself, play for your kids, ask your friends to bring their own dusty instruments over for dinner one night. And consider making a cash contribution to a worthy music education program instead of giving away the thing whose value far exceeds the dollars it sells for, the key to the maker in you.
